Civil Superintendent Major Projects
Haystack Recruitment is partnering with a leading international civil engineering and infrastructure contractor to find an experienced Civil Superintendent. You will run the field side of major civil work: leading crews and subcontractors, keeping production on plan, and setting the standard for safety on site.
About the Role
Reporting to the Construction Manager, you will oversee day-to-day civil operations, direct forepersons and multiple crews, and make sure work is planned, sequenced and delivered safely, on budget and on schedule. You will split your time between the field and the office, and you will have a real say in how the work gets built.
What You’ll Do
Safety and Leadership
- Lead and champion a safety-first culture across employees and subcontractors.
- Run safety meetings and inspections, build safe work plans, complete hazard assessments and Field Level Risk Assessments (FLRAs), and mentor crews on the ground.
- Ensure strict compliance with applicable provincial occupational health and safety regulations and project-specific safety policies.
Field Operations and Production
- Supervise multiple crews and subcontractors, and hold forepersons accountable to assignments, project policies and procedures.
- Drive quality, efficiency and productivity, coaching forepersons through productivity issues and helping crews work through challenges.
- Understand the scope and sequence of work, help forepersons plan and prioritize, and redirect crews and equipment quickly to minimize downtime.
- Set crew structures for optimal performance and present the production work plan to crews.
- Order and coordinate equipment and materials to deliver production on budget and on schedule.
Planning, Quality and Reporting
- Contribute to the construction plan, develop work methods, and plan materials, equipment and schedules for civil operations.
- Review plans and specifications to support job set-up, and provide technical input to identify and resolve design issues.
- Review daily schedules and production with Field Engineers and update the monthly schedule.
- Work with the Quality team to coordinate inspections and testing for your scopes of work.
- Document daily field activities and report on progress, quality control, resource needs and customer relations.
- Other duties as assigned.
What You’ll Bring
- 7 to 10 years of relevant construction experience on civil, road, bridge, tunnel or similar projects, including hands-on site experience.
- An engineering degree, or an equivalent combination of technical training and related experience.
- Experience supervising multiple crews and subcontractors.
- Strong skills reading engineering drawings, specifications and site plans.
- Ability to use drafting software to develop construction means and methods plans.
- Familiarity with engineering tools and equipment, automated systems and remote tooling systems.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Excellent written and verbal communication, and the interpersonal skills to lead a large team.
- A detail-oriented, hard-working approach and flexibility to work in both the field and the office.
Nice to Have
- Experience on public-sector or Ministry of Transportation infrastructure projects.
